A bit off-topic now I guess but going back to the segment stuff, hereās a little theory thing I came up with whilst thinking about segment/TAS stuff recently:
That appears to make a lot of sense. Of course you might always want to do an unlimited segment / TAS run even if stuff is relatively easy (purely for entertainment), especially for an otherwise longer game. But I agree that runs should generally get more TAS-like if stuff is harder to do.
Anyway, back on topic⦠uh⦠how is the run coming along?
For about 10 minutes we considered restarting the run from the 7th segment after Rama discovered a new strat while out of bounds but it wasnāt worth the miniscule time save.
Currently 141 segments done (the majority of those segs are saveloads, around 100), current map is d2_trainstation_05, currently lost in the darkness of Oob.
Maximus, I donāt appreciate you coming here, and using HL2DQ as some sort of charter to act like a know-it-all when it comes to running within Source games. However, you have nothing to say on the cheating accusation Iām sure youāve seen? But hey, as long as you stick your nose into almost every HL2 run out just there to give your unwarranted two cents, thatās all that really matters.
I have no problem with any debate on these forums that are within the topic of discussion, but bullshitting us and acting as if youāre above any of our community decisions, and furthermore acting like a dick as you did here:
which we turned the other cheek on, will land you a permanent ban that I have no problem issuing. No member is above anyone else here; even if they think they have some seniority because they participated in a project before any of us. And, to act as if itās any skin off our asses not to have your approval is, as z1m so poetically said, idiotic.
To summarize this, lose your entitlement if you want to participate on these forums. Or, stop posting here whenever we do something that isnāt kosher to the way you did things 10 fucking years ago.
I did wonder if someone else was going to mention that. It is pretty hilarious that he can accuse people here of cheating over some arbitrary opinion when his run had timescaled segments (which, come to think of it, surely at least one DQ runner would or at least should have noticed upon first looking at the demo).
o40 figured it out a while ago; his reasoning as to why he told Inexistence, typical, and I is beyond me, though I remember him occasionally expressing his extreme feelings towards some of the runners. The most obvious being bandit. It also doesnāt help that he was the most active on the forums just to end up with one segment.
I was quite surprised to see a poll regarding the difficulty for the re-run, and even more surprised to see that the overwhelming majority were in favor of easy; it seemed to me that, at least in general, segmented runs tended to be made on hard difficulty while single-segment runs tended to be made on whichever difficulty was reasonable. What makes easy so appealing for this run?
This seems to be a really common question, I suppose Iāll try to give a more in-depth answer. I think the reason why segmented runs are often done on hard is because itās seen as taking more skill because the game is on a higher difficulty, which isnāt necessarily true and it sure isnāt in the case of HL2. Although HL2DQ was done on I donāt see why we would be obligated to do the same.
Easy is a more interesting category because of the extra damage boosts you can do. I think a lot of people are underestimating how cool theyāre going to look because all theyāve seen are the relatively simple damage boosts that people do in full game runs. Why would we want to run on hard? Thereās really no added difficulty with hard, you just have a couple of segments where you want to get lucky and not get shot, and the combat segments play out a little bit differently, and they are a bit slower. Thereās also the fact that itās much easier to route health/ammo on hard than it is on easy, because you canāt do as many damage boosts the routing is much simpler. So I donāt really see any reason to run on hard in this game.
I find that thereās very little incentive to beat HL2DQ teamās time by running the same category. First of all, it has timescaled segments. Secondly the segments arenāt very optimized by todayās standards. In general the movement is pretty sloppy and thereās also some pretty weird parts. When they get to the airboat they first grab a barrel, as if theyāre gonna use it for getting over the gate. In the next segment they just throw it away immediately and get over the gate without it. Thirdly the time has been beaten in new engine segmented and RTA(full game run).
The goal is to make an awesome speedrun and not to ābeatā HL2DQ. Although the poll results are about 75% for easy in the forums, Iām fairly certain that if this poll was inside the re-run group the result wouldāve been close to 100% for easy. Itās just better in every way in HL2.
Would like to point out, I mentioned this before I found out Done Quick was cheated. Now I donāt give a damn what you guys do, just make it look cool and donāt cheat.
So, so far, for every minute this run spends, another 3 2 are saved over the old time.
Oh. My. God. Question about the timesheet: are all the last maps still unrouted, or is that just outdated? Just wondering (in case one day Iām bored and want to play around - though thatās unlikely ).
Other than that, HYPE!
