Half Life 2 Old Engine Rerun

Trainstation_05 and canals_01 are finished, nearly done with canals_02.

We’ve got tons of clips, triggerdelays and other fun. Like Rama said:

More organised and now you can get a good idea of the amount of time we’ve saved over DQ, except for one map but I think the DQ timing is incorrect.

Nice layout! But you forgot to put Maximus under supportive forumers.

edit: also did you really mention me for the guard boost wow i only contributed that because i know nothing else about hl2 lol
oh and also i still think that breen thing could work except im probably wrong because as i said i am bad at hl2

I love getting my name in credits on all these projects without having done anything =D

Edit: Bare in mind that DQ rounded all their segment times down, resulting in about 50 seconds longer than what they claimed. I think you beat their TS3 time

If you manually time the video, the DQ time for trainstation_03 comes out to about 13.8x so I’m pretty sure you beat it.

Was there triggerdelays used in the old Old engine run? or even Dwahmov? I might have to rewatch both because I’ve only noticed them in HL21.

No there weren’t, hence one of the reasons for this run. DWaHMoV couldn’t have used trigger delay because wait handling is changed in the new engine.

By the way, I know my obsession with that Breen clip was probably quite funny, but I did some testing and I think it is actually a thing, just not as big a thing as I thought. If you quickly bring an object into Breen’s room with the gravity gun in it, you can kill its collision on the doors of his elevator and potentially clip up and still save some time over going down and back up.
It also could be possible to clip whilst in the elevator with Alyx, but if you do it too early the game will softlock, and you’d also have to go slighty diagonally somehow and get stuck in the wall to continue going up. So that’s a lot less likely to be a real thing.

Anyway I’m done now. People who are better than me at Half-Life 2 can try this out and see whether I’m still being silly. :wink:

oh and P.S. I will eventually take a look at the Citadel maps if someone doesn’t find something before I get round to it which someone probably will

You can make Breen’s chair clippable if you jam it in the door as it closes, so clipping in the elevator would be too slow, the main problem is getting back down to Alyx after destroying the core, so unless there’s a way to go oob, fall under the map, and clip back up, it’s not going to work because you need to be in the elevator for it to start moving. There’s probably another way to abuse the triggers and get it done faster but we’re too hyped for boatless canals :smiley:

Yeah the problem with breen_01 is that even if you could get to the core early to destroy it, the game doesn’t end if you aren’t near Alyx.

There was almost a strat where we’d clip way out of the map to the gman cutscene and open the door he’s supposed to open and go straight to credits but that door is set to not be openable by the player (curse these good mappers).

I know that, and I thought that doing so would be impossible so was seeing if there was some other way to do it, which it seems there is, so we have something.

That’s why I had the idea of going to the elevator with Alyx first. That way she keeps moving up and ends up close enough to end the game.

I remember that as well from back when I was in the Skype group. Isn’t that thing really obnoxiously far away too?

p.s. just quoting three posts took so much wrestling with this forum software. i take it migrating to a new one would be obscenely difficult

Yeah, it’s really far away, I think doing the elevatoring to get there would take just as long as finishing the map normally, since the route would look like this

Unless of course there’s a way to go faster by doing it in shorter drops, but idk It’ not going to happen anyway.
