The Tricks Video

Sexy stuff! Nice video RandomEngy!! And the music fit in very well, have you mixed it yourself or are they just normal songs? Could you let me know what songs you used?I haven’t watched the trick-demos (not all at least) so this was quite a treat for me! Thanks RandomEngy and “trickers”

Unfortunately I think Half-Life 1 doesn’t have a wide-screen mode so I’d have to stretch it to get it to fill the screen. Maybe I’ll just crop the top and bottom instead. The music was just normal songs. The first song is “The River Cruise Part 2” from the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The second song is “Dreaming In Colour” from The Seduction of Claude Debussy by Art of Noise. If you liked the song you should buy the album; the whole thing is simply fantastic.

HL1 supports widescreen (see video options) =)

When did they add that? I had just assumed a game that old wouldn’t have WS support.

Those are some incredible tricks. Especially the backwards jump.

nice  didn’t expect lots of syncing. sometimes it was a bit hard to see what happened (like lx’s canals heart attack) but great work nonetheless

Nice.

Just got home and my dl was finished! Very well made and fantastic tricks, most of which i had not seen before =)highlights (for me): alyx goes matrix, pincus does c17, suga (i think?) does highway17 backwards, o40 (i think again) manages the dumpster jump right before citadel but screws up in the end ;[, finding out that the guards is rushing to hide in a dark corner, maximus mortar grenade boost (really neat, loved it as much as when you first posted it), the headcrab jump which noone except us will understand, to see my own bridge run in the trick movie =), the boat boost up on a chimney (spelling?), realizing how im going to list pretty much every scene, what exactly happend with that zombie? anyone care to explain?, the legs hanging in the tree (a friend accidently did it when we played hl2 for the first time and we had lots of fun with that =) ), guard and barrel boost on the first canal map, alyx getting stuck, all stuckjumps, switching object to fly on mid air, jumping on a antlion, wallclimbing (i was supposed to make a demo on this, but since i never actually succeded to boost myself all the way up there maxiums made one instead ;] ), wallclipping could have worked if the walls were thinner, or if we experimented more with it. im guessing the future will tell if someone is planning on challanging this run, boosting up on that helicopter was cool, i though that gravity gun boost only worked on dm, airboating upside down? how did you manage with that?, gravity gun boosting with a strider LOL! sorry for listing like everything, im guessing what im trying to say is that it was AWSOME!the only thing i miss is the airboat collision boosting in water hazard near a red barn (seen at 25:00 in the hl2dq video) which i think dale or lightning “demanded to be in the final video” if noone remembers this ill try and make a demo of it to show you, looked fantastic. If your still reading your the best.

I totally loved the trickmovie. It contained a lot of things I hadnt seen before. Thanks for making it.

For the DVD version I made it full screen and eliminated the green flash. It feels a lot better; thanks for the input, Demonstrate. Also what were you looking for as in the background footage? I’d like to just Fraps the first background (the trainstation one) without the text on there. I think it shows off how nice HL2 looks and provides a nice, non-intrusive, non-spoiling background. Also, what resolution/framerate do you want the background video to be in? Keep in mind I’m not sure how to do 29.97 or whatever the retarded framerate they picked for NTSC.

Actually for background video I thought we had already settled on a fast-paced series of tricks from either the run or tricks collection, probably slightly blurred. Finally watched the Tricks video, thought it was great. Just a few constructive criticisms:One thing that I REALLY wished you had included was the demo of me leaving the level with the airboat and falling into nothingness. That was a big find! :frowning: :(Also the brute acceleration clip only had the end included, which really wasn’t the meat of the trick, it’s the “powering up” and then launching forward part. Since I had included it in the Trick section I hoped it would get in there.Other things were Chib’s orbjump cut out too soon, the big block floating in air (by itself) isn’t shown, and when I’m deep in that pit it doesn’t show HOW I get there, just me firing a rocket, which isn’t that great since for all they know I could have just noclipped down there. Finally, in that clip of Eli and the girl (forget her name surprisingly) teleporting out, it would have been better to show me flying in and seeing eli go inside of me rather than them teleporting out.I think that’s about it, although those first two were biggies for me. If there is any way of crunching those as well as other people’s suggestions in there, would it be too hard to do? I know this one is already on a torrent and everything but just curious

Longtime lurker, never a poster… :)But, I have to ask. What’s that first song in the trick-video called, starting during the Lamar sequence? Can’t get it out of my freeking head…

This video is genius!!! Litteraly awesome! Please Random, can you tell me what the music titles and artists are? Just love it <3 :)EDIT : sorry, hadn’t seen the tracks names up here, thanks

Lazaroth:Song 1: “The River Cruise Part 2” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Danny ElfmanMaximus:I had heard that but I sincerely believe that the regular HL2 intro would just be better, rather than blurry tricks that might try to catch the viewer’s attention but be obscured by menu choices.Anyway a lot of the cuts I made in the video just had to do with how long it took to do something and how cool it looked.Leaving the level with the airboat: It just took too long to do (to walk over to where you fall) and there were already a couple other “leaving the level” clips in the video. The airboat launch one just overshadows it in terms impressiveness, IMO.Now that you mention it I do regret not getting the acceleration in there somewhere. It would have been nice to get the launch on a musical hit. I think what happened is I scavenged that clip to go in the “touch the sky” bit, cut it to sync with the music and forgot about the beginning.Orbjump: cut a bit short for syncing reasons. I wanted the final stuckjump to start on a “color”.Floating block in the air: I guess, but what’s in there is just about as weird.Getting into the pit: It just took too long to do and it was difficult to tell what was going on. I thought the rocket shot summed up "I got down here, and it’s really far."Also, I picked the teleporting bit to show the “near shortcut” version of the trick. What it basically says is “I got in here and would have gotten out had the game not gypped me”. Just getting there leaves some questions unanswered.Unfortunately it would be really hard to rework the video. I built the video from the ground up with music sync in mind and messing about with it (especially adding clips) would undoubtedly screw it up. There’s one or two things I would change but overall I’m happy with the result.Anyway, the video is now on Filefront.

The skybox leaving the level wasn’t actually leaving it. I was stuck in the scenery. The other level leaving part I was dead and it would have loaded if I pushed any buttons. The mapexit is the only instance of completely exiting the physical boundary box of a level discovered as of yet in any half life game. You’re literally walking out of the game.I know this was a lot of work and I DO like what was done, I was just hoping you would be able to fit some of these in, considering if they’re not in, they will NEVER be seen outside of a handful of people, and that kind of saddens me =/

lol. They are only 2 demos out of like a gazillion!!

Hey DemonStrate, short question - short answer. :DWill you be able to release the DVD in the next two days? Guess not. ;)Greets, heny

Thanks RandomEngy, I may now rest once more in my home territory…Back to the lurking!

Hmm, well here’s my in-depth review of the movie. Not necessary I know, but I’ve got nothing better to do at the present. I really hope you re-consider this first release as a sort of beta test of the final movie. Keep in mind though I really REALLY do appreciate what you’ve done for us, you’ve been a HUGE help. Makes me sad that some of what we discovered won’t be shown ever again though.Overall: Good quality, some nice synching, but too much emphasis on synching instead of content. Even if the video was totally de-synched, if it showed EVERYTHING and the way it was meant to be seen, it would still be better in my opinion. Might also have been nice if tricks were divided up by stunts, bloopers, and tricks, or at least was identifiable which was which.MUSIC=====First Song: Awesome! Wish it was longer.Second Song: MUCH too slow and elevator-music-ish.CONTENT=======This is rated by how well the trick was captured to the movie, not the trick itself. Everything not included was listed as “great” or “fine”, and there was a lot of it. I removed them because they got in the way of the comments that had more to say.Headdy Skit: Abrupt stop while Kleiner is talking.Lamp: Doesn’t show what’s happening, or how it got like that.Gunship Self-Mortar: A little sudden, but OK.Coast Wallclip: Also sudden, but I think it showed the whole demo anyway.Gregori: Fine, but hard to see what was going on.Judith Teleport: Does not show the trick at all, and isn’t clear on what’s happening.Super GravJump: Missing the rest of the trick, which was to jump to the other tower then fall without dying.Crazy Legs: Fine, but don’t think it showed enough of the beginning to show it was a blooper.Big DumpsterJump: Very sudden, but looked good.Stunstick Jump: Great, but the idea of showing the landings LATER is confusing and people I showed it to didn’t get it.Board Stucklaunch: Same as before, and same for the next four. Would have been better to show some more of the beginning.Barrel Boost: See above.Moving Pallet Gravjump: See above.Brute Accel: Doesn’t even show the trick.Big Stuckjump: See Stunstick Jump comment. All Landings: Confusing, hard to follow, and takes away from the original tricks.Heart Attack: Can’t tell what happened, need to record earlier.Coffin Entry: Can’t even see where he is before he drops.Stuck Judith: Can’t see how it happened, but since the elevator stopping is the most interesting, was OK.Forward Stuckjump: Can’t even see how he’s being launched, confuses people. Needs more of the beginning.Antlion Hop: Hard to see what happened, but that’s just the nature of the demo.Bridge Wallclimb: Kinda boring to show, I actually made a note that I wanted to take that one out.Dead Map Exit: Sudden, needs a bit more of the beginning, but otherwise fine.Swimming Zombie (Second Time): Again?Airboat Upside-Down: Sudden but great, since the demo is sudden anyway.Long Rocket Flight: Pointless. Doesn’t show how I got down there, can’t tell where I am anyway.Stuck Block: Doesn’t show how it happened, or the follow-up view as I’m underneath it.Stray Rocket: Fine, but would have been better to also see the follow-up adlibbed mortar shot.Chib Orbjump: Cuts out too soon.Floating Car: What’s going on there?Ending: Strange.MISSING STUFF!===========The map exit trick. Man I wish that was in there.Elevator wallclip.A slew of other bloopers and glitches, some of which I can’t remember. Would have been much happier to see everything :frowning:

I understand your concerns but the video is in its final form. I really don’t feel like going through and reworking the entire thing, which from your comments seems like would be neccesary. If you want some tips on how to make your own video I’ll be happy to oblige, or if you want to get someone else to make the video I’ll be perfectly fine with it.Also the floating car was just me playing around with phys_timescale .1 to get some credits footage. Nothing in the demo collection really had the right length and feel to go with it.
