HL2 TSA

Fair points. I suppose we wouldn’t have to run the entire game but only do certain levels that are tricky and show them as opposed to the entire game. This would provide an entertainment value but wouldn’t really bring anything away from the actual run. Thoughts?

I think that there is merit in that, but I think if you are going to showcase what is possible via TAS-like cheats it has to different then what is shown with the current shortcuts. In fact, what would be best is making a highlight clip of different scenes showcasing ALTERNATIVE methods through maps with good potential. There are many glitches we didn’t use for various reasons… sometimes a different way would have been cooler but done via flying instead because it was technically faster. Sometimes we didn’t have enough health. Sometimes we didn’t have the right objects. If you make a showcase video kind of like the tricks video that could be worth watching. Showing a remake of bandits coast runs with slightly improved turning would be boring though. Some ideas for that if you choose to do it… 1.) Using the “broken bottle” glitch to amp up fast, incredible speeds in a short period of time. You could possibly collision bump right over the gap that we normally use a mine for in this way. (never used).2.) Using lonerville’s “super turbo up” technique somewhere (never used).3.) Finding a way via an impressive and realistically feasible rocketjump to the platform in… I forget the level, it was right before suga’s mortar jump + gravity jump off the car to fly through the whole level and land past the gate. We used a piece of board and flew and I was quite disappointed because there seemed to be a lot of potential for another cool trick that would be faster.4.) Destroying the helicopters entirely with long distance mortars (if you can find enough in the level)? (ala the prison helicopter fight).5.) Finding cool ways to get to the top of coast_09 (where we flew with the palette) without flying the whole way.6.) Whatever other difficult glitches you can find in the game that would improve a segment of the level. There are others but I can’t think of any right at this moment. Things like that would be interesting. I think an entire speedrun would be bad though, unless you just made the thing into a long “demo run” aka showing whats possible with the engine. They did something like with with Super Mario for Nintendo in a TAS.

Those are some good suggestions you got there, what you’re saying does make more sense than doing the entire game. If you think of anymore, please share it with us, we’d love to have them.

Actually now that I really think about it a lot of the tricks I’m imagining would probably still be impossible even with slowdown. Either a highlight clip or a “demo run” like the Super Mario TAS (not the speed one, the crazy tricks one) would be most interesting. However, a true TAS would showcase no hits from enemy damage, crazy physics flips in every jump on the airboat, using the falling out of the world glitch to finish a level (if possible), stuff that is impossible only because there is no efficient re-record feature. A true TAS in this fashion would require hundreds of re-records in a single map, at least. Saving while moving is glitchy and results in bad video.Edit: Unless you bound a key to a super slow slow-down and then saved, and loaded it with that same super slown-down activated. Could work.

I really like the idea of doing insanely big boosts with nade’s in places where you used flying. One of my personal favourites would be the coast 09 idea. There could also be other places on coast where insane boosts could be achieved.
