Half-Life Single-Segment, Easy skill 32:55

Well, that was sweet. I have tremendous respect for anyone attempting a single segment run of most games. So, kudos. I’m a little sad though that I saw the test chamber skip because I was hoping to see it in the segmented run for the first time  I was familiar with the skip from HL:S. I just had no idea how you would get up there in HL.

A couple of questions though:

While I’ve heard of the infinite health door before I’m a little confused as to how it works exactly. Why did you just wait in front of it while being shot at? Do NPCs need to inflict damage on it for it to open? And how “infinite” is infinite really if you know what I mean? Is it just an exaggerated name to suggest that it’s A LOT or are you literally invincible from that point on? In the former case it looks like a dangerous thing to use because you’d never know when your health actually runs out. In the latter case I’d expect the time improvement on a segmented run to be even more vast because you can be as ruthless as you want with your health. Eitherway, really cool glitch.

Then there was the room before the teleport to Xen. I remember reading that it’s very hard (meaning you need to get really lucky) to throw in the snark into the teleporter at the right time to avoid the kill trigger. Obviously you used a hornet here, so does that make a difference or did you just take the risk because it’s such a huge time saver?

I think I had one more question, but I can’t remember right now. The only thing I’m curious about is how the segmented run is coming along. Are you guys still in the planning phase? The activity on the SDA thread seems to have dropped to ~0 unfortunately. Is that your next objective on the agenda or are you planning to put some work into a GMC run or something completely different? I’ definitely love to see a GMC run at some point in the future. I’ll certainly grab the HQ version once it surfaces.

Anyway, again, great job. Enjoyed the run a lot.

Thank you very much. I appreciate all kind of response.

About the door; It’s a very simple mapping error. The damage value of the door is set to “-1” which means that if you get stuck in it, you’ll receive +1 health point. This also applies to armor points. That is why I’m waiting for the grunts to take away all my armor. Once all armor is gone, I shoot an AR-grenade to scare the NPC behind me, he will try to take cover, and the game calculates his path to be straight through the door, and thats enough to make the door get open, neither the door is locked or not.
Once I get stuck in the door, I’ll receive 1hp/frame. So infinite is a bit exaggerated. 100fps - 100hp/sec. To take real advantage of this I raise my fps to 1000, which is max possible - 1000hp/sec. And I stayed there for ~3.8s which is enough for the route used. If I stumble upon trouble, extra falls or damageboosts, it have happened that I’ve died. Because just as you thought, I have no idea how much HP i got left.

Xen teleporter; Snarks and hornet bees (or alien controllers as rofi are using in Crowbar run) works the same way. Hornet is an obviously better and easier way to do it though. The bees is not affected by your velocity and are also more aim-able. And it’s not hard to do at all. I think I’ve never failed an attempt at this spot.

The segmented speedrun haven’t been started yet. Mostly because the team cant agree with the moddings SW have planned. I personally think the hlspbunny mod is enough. But I think the planning is pretty much complete.
We just have to agree to something then start running, we’ll see.

Hope I covered everything.

That’s actually so simple, but still it blows my mind that you were able to figure this out.

Pure awesomeness, I’m speechless…

Can’t wait for HQ either.

Edit: You finished this on my birthday, best present ever

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ;D lol

Just watched HQ version. It really made my happy, especially “On The Rail” skip and Health Door bug.
This is crazy shit ! Quadrazid is bloody rocketjumper =) Xen was totally pwned, nothing more I can say.

I was impressed! It felt like watching a segmented run. Great job!

Criken2 just favorited your video (he has like 108k subscribers on youtube). Prepare to be overrun, quady ;D

I know Criken and I’ve done several special effects jobs for him…!

VIVA LA RESISTANCE

Oh god it’s been long since I saw that movie. They write such good songs. <3

So this is the video you were talking about =)

I absolutely loved this. It was particularly fun to watch because I attempted single segmenting Half-Life so many times way back in the day, and the best I ever managed was a 39 minute run. When I was watching this I kept thinking to myself, “What was I doing for almost seven minutes…?”

All the new tricks were awesome, especially the test chamber. I was so curious how you guys were planning to hit that trigger, then I actually saw it done. Jaw dropping. I really liked your method of traversing Surface Tension after the minefield. I was hoping you would go further out of the skybox so you’d be on flat ground, then tau jump from there, but seeing you fly through the skybox like that was so unexpected. Then the tau boost right after… Not to mention your use of the health door. I was so happy to see that used. I was stunned at some of the tricks you landed, I can’t count them all.

It’s clear you’ve been practicing this for a great deal of time and had a plan for every area, but the run was far from mechanical. It was very skill driven, which is what made it so much more entertaining to watch. Amazing job, quad. I am very much looking forward to the segmented run. Until then, I intend to post this everywhere I can and give it the attention it deserves.

Also, thanks for the special thanks. I wasn’t expecting that =)

I already watched this after he posted that. STOP THINKING LIKE ME.
