Half Life 2 Old Engine Rerun

Wouldn’t dropping to easy be a little lame after HL2DQ and DWaHMoV did it on Hard?

Yes, if there will be a re-run it should be on hard

Maybe it would, but I don’t see a reason to run on Hard just because they did so, 8 years ago. If this run is aiming to be as fast as possible, to achieve that, it should be done on Easy.

^ That’s what I thought I just posted before my internet messed up. ^

I’d prefer to see the re-run being done on easy because it’s faster and more entertaining imo. Lowering the difficulty would probably make the run harder to optimize because of all the possible damage boosts you can do, you’d have to have more precise health and ammo management.

Not sure how it would be lame, at least not from a viewer’s standpoint. Obviously when directly competing it is important to play on the same ‘category’, but why even compete? Nothing wrong with being diverse when it means the outcome has plenty more positives (entertainment, faster time, allows for more tricks), especially for HL2 where the difference is much larger than HL1. Would be nice to look at choice of difficulty, version etc as a strategy instead of a restriction.

Yeah, it’s supposed to be a speedrun, finish the game as fast as possible, we shouldn’t be held back by a difficulty, which isn’t necessary to run on.

How can you say your better than Done Quick though if you put it on an easier difficulty? Its like saying, “I got a goal form the middle of the field in football! Though it was while there was no defenders or goalie.” Sort of. I’m not good at analogies.
Look at this -
Done Quick - Hard
DWaHMoV - Hard
EP1RUN - Hard(i think)
EP2RUN - Hard
OE rerun should be done on hard following the theme.

Sorry for rant.

Is the point to be better than HL2DQ or is the point to make a sick speedrun? I would hope that everyone here is more concerned about the second objective.

I’d also love to hear from those who are familiar why earlier runs were done on hard. I always found it odd that runs made supposedly to push games as fast as they could go were playing not on the fastest difficulty. At least new engine has stuck launches which replaced a lot of damage strats, old engine doesnt even have that.

Could say the team made a better/more logical decision than DQ when it came to choosing the right difficulty.

Yes, this is why competition shouldn’t be important in my opinion. Ofc the new run would be technically incomparable to the previous, but the idea is to make a fast and entertaining run, not slow yourselves down by placing obstacles in your way just because the previous team chose to do so (though as Paperboat said it would be interesting to know the reason for that choice). Nobody would find the unnecessary limitation of damage boosts or extra time spent killing enemies ‘impressive’.

We’re doing EP2DQ on hard because we’re dumb and the chopper fight looks cool on hard. Doesn’t make that much of a difference since we don’t have weapons to damage boost with for half of the run, the difference is probably about 5-10 seconds between easy and hard.

Make a poll, maybe?

Speed in speedrun is important. Hint hint.

HARD OR EASY?

Let’s play on normal[sub]pls no[/sub]

Seven to one three four.

Easy is still the winner.

Still think it should be done on hard, but whatever.

I still think Hard as well. It’d look more impressive to me knowing that one stray bullet could kill Gordon, instead of him being able to tank bullets like nothing

At the end of the day though, it’s your run, your rules

It’s actually way harder to optimize the run if it’s on easy. Although the recent trend in Source runs lately has been to just not do a Phase 1 run at all, I’d like to see this run being planned properly. There’s so many possibilities in routing because of all the possible damage boosts you can do. You don’t want to end up finding new routes half way through the run and realizing that you have to redo a bunch of maps.
