I’ve had a half hour play around with the segment, and watched Darkevil’s demo far, far too many times at various speeds. From what I can gather, everything up to the end is as close to perfectly optimised as is gonna realistically happen. The ending hallway, I see only one tiny loss of sprint, just after jumping the barrel, and then the abh at the end I think is done as quickly as can safely be done. I think that to optimise the very end, you would have to accept a slower beginning, which I think would end up losing time.
I think that even beginning the ABH a few ticks earlier, you’re not going to gain any more than those couple of ticks, because the ABH ends so soon in the next segment.
Of course, man, you’re free to improve it, that’s how the project goes, and good luck to you in doing so! It’ll be great to have an even more optimised segment if you manage it, but I support moving on, because I really think the demo is very optimised as is.
So exec went from “waaah im whining because this segment can be improved but i dont actually try to do so waaaah whine whine give up after 20 minutes” to “improving this shit easily” mode. wtf exec, if youre going to improve a segment, dont pretend it’s giving you a hard time when its not.
Nice job improving Exec, I checked the tick counts, and Exec’s ending (after the ABH stuff) is about 0.5s faster than DE’s version. Obviously the ABH itself is then about 0.5s slower, and exec did you say something on Skype about the save not being good at the end of your version?
So it amounts to this segment being improvable by 0.5s definitely, what are people’s thoughts? Also, I think a good ABH as it seemed exec had at the end of his improvement would save maybe 0.2-0.4s on the next segment, because that thing looked quick. So there’s a lot of use for time.
I would rather have exec say what his thought are, rather than just disappear into the night without telling us he’s happy with it or not. As inex mentioned the fling is slower so I see eXeC might want to improve upon it, but we’re also dealing with a big random element here.
Well, I saved right when I landed on the ground, so an additional jump in 017 to keep speed is going to be too late.
I dont think thats a big problem, sprinting is almost the same - and also, we get to do the first turn faster by sprinting (we will even gain speed from strafing when we turn)
Moving on.
018 has begun.
Best way Gocnak found to segment at without losing too much time to the break is after the steamy-pipes you jump in water, then press use on the ladder going out of the water. Segment as you press use to get out of the ladder.
That breaks 019 into the 180 degree abh turn into the stupid hallway with annoying corners, followed by the manhack/water/barrelfly room, ending the level.
020 will prolly be “get to the motherfucking airboat”, and then the fun begins at segment 21! But that’s something for the future. 018 first my youth!
